Starting in early 2025, Google Cloud will require all users who currently log in with only a password to activate multi-factor authentication (MFA). This shift to Google Cloud mandatory MFA means users must add a secondary authentication step, like an authenticator app or physical security key, to access their accounts. By the end of the year, this requirement will extend to “federated users,” those accessing Google Cloud resources through a third-party authentication provider.

While MFA is optional for personal Google accounts, about 70% of users have enabled two-step verification (2SV). For business and enterprise clients, however, Google Cloud mandatory MFA is required due to the increased risks with corporate data. Individual users trying to access Google Cloud Platform resources with a regular account will also be required to activate MFA.
